Hong Kong: Goldfishes & Goodbye

February 2024

On our last morning in Hong Kong, kids asked to see goldfishes! We had spotted some along Goldfish Street on the way back to the hotel and decided to return so that kids can go through the shops at their pace.

But first, breakfast.

Tai On Coffee & Tea Shop

At the corner of Pitt Street and Canton Road in Yau Ma Tai

Tai On Coffee & Tea Shop is a contemporary take on the classic cha chaan teng experience. The interiors was beautifully nostalgic, with traditional mosaic tiles and booth seating. We chose the booth seats, of course!

As someone who typically doesn’t favor brunch, I found myself thoroughly enjoying our breakfast here. The latte I ordered was rich and aromatic, not the watered down version at some brunch restaurants. Also loved the intricate Pegasus latte art—a delightful surprise that showcased the barista’s skill. And, J had her first taste of a polo bun (pineapple bun) here. The crispy, sweet crust paired with the soft, fluffy interior made for an unforgettable introduction to this Hong Kong staple.

Goldfish Market

Tung Choi Street

We then made our way to the Goldfish Market, where there were shop after shop filled with bags of goldfishes! The kids were fascinated, wandering through shop after shop, captivated by the colorful goldfish and other small animals on display.

Couldn’t resist ordering some Mammy’s Pancake on 33 Soy Street. There were so many flavours to choose from, and we got coffee and the original to share. The kids loved the crispy edges!

Hak Dei Kitchenware

618 Shanghai Street

One of my must-dos for this trip was to visit Hak Dei, a treasure trove of nostalgic home goods, blending traditional Hong Kong charm with a modern twist. From locally painted ceramics and bamboo steamers to cast-iron egg waffle molds, the store offers a curated selection that celebrates iconic local brands and items. I love kitchenware, and Daddy let me browse in peace and solitude for a while. So happy to buy a lilac Camel vacuum flask from here!

Goodbye!

Our 6D5N trip to Hong Kong was an incredible experience, yet it felt like we only scratched the surface of what this dynamic city has to offer. From the bustling markets and towering skyscrapers to the serene temples and picturesque hiking trails, Hong Kong is a city of contrasts that captivates at every turn. We truly enjoyed this trip and look forward to returning to explore another side of Hong Kong!
